Amy Poehler's advice about appreciating your body is great for all ages

I know that Amy Poehler's video advice to a woman who doesn't like her body has made the rounds on the internet, but it is so good that it is worth repeating, and sharing.

The Smart Girls at the Party web series aims to celebrate "extraordinary individuals who are changing the world by being themselves" and features a Q&A session with Poehler called "Ask Amy."  In this installment she answers a questions from a woman who wants to know how to handle body issues and who has never liked her body.

"Sometimes a good way to help yourself get out of it is to have some gratitude. What I mean by that is, if you can go around your body and kind of thank it for what it gives you and thank yourself for your great eyesight, or your thick hair, or your nice legs, or your strong teeth, or whatever it is that you have that you were given. And make friends with those parts of your body and not try to focus on the parts that will never change," Poehler said.

She also advised that "you should focus on what you have and not obsess about what you don’t have, the happier you will be. You really will be happier in life if you let go of the things that you will never have. "

I love her message of gratitude and focus on the positive. Poehler does remarkably well what I think all tween parents want to do for their child when they find it hard to embrace themselves: empathize and offer comfort while at the same time providing perspective, wisdom, optimism and appreciation of their gifts.
