Touring Chicago's beautiful churches: The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii

Touring Chicago's beautiful churches:  The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii is the seventh church in my series.  My husband and I attended the Sunday morning 8:30 Mass.

Let's begin with what a shrine is:

The term shrine signifies a church or other sacred place to which the faithful make pilgrimages for a particular pious reason with the approval of the local ordinary.  At shrines, more abundant means of salvation are to be provided for the faithful; the Word of God is to be carefully proclaimed; liturgical life is to be appropriately fostered especially through the celebration of the Eucharist and penance; and approved forms of popular piety are to be cultivated. - Code of Canon Law, 1230 and 1234.

Inspired by Italian-American culture and traditions, Our Lady of Pompeii Parish opened in 1911.  Ground was broken for the current church in 1923.  Joseph Cardinal Bernadin proclaimed the church a Shrine in 1994.  It is dedicated to honor Mary, the Mother of God.

Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, Ph.D. is the rector.  The church is located at 1224 West Lexington Street in the neighborhood known as Little Italy.  The phone number is 312-421-3757.  The Shrine is not subsidized by the Archdiocese of Chicago and relies solely on the generosity of parishioners, visitors and benefactors.  There are many events coming up, so check out their web site or give them a call.
