This third Sunday of Lent brings us the story of the woman at the well or the woman of Samaria (John 4:7-42). It is my favorite story of all the Gospels. It is the story of a woman who is so shunned by society that she fetches her water at a time when she knows no one will be around. But then she encounters Jesus.
Jesus, smiling, "Could I have a drink?"
Me, "Huh? Are you talking to me?"
Jesus, now laughing, "Yes, you! Could I trouble you for a drink?"
Me, "Well, uh, sure, I guess." Why is this man with the piercing eyes and mega watt smile speaking to me?
Jesus, "Thank you, very kind of you." He wipes his mouth with his sleeve. "So how's your day going?"
Me, "My day? It's fine, I guess." I'm getting increasingly more uncomfortable. Who is this guy?
Jesus, "So, do you come here often?" His mega watt smile has turned mischievous and now I'm getting annoyed.
Me, "Look, I don't know who you think you are, but ..." I stop and stare at him. The mischievous smile is still there, but now the eyes dance with a secret revealed.
Me, "No way!"
Jesus, "Yep. Way."
I stare at him for a long time until he beckons me to sit with him and he says, with a tenderness in his voice that makes my knees buckle, "Let's talk."
