What is the definition of racism?

What is a racism?  The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines racism as a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race; racial prejudice or discrimination.

My neighbor had her own definition.

Years ago my neighbors and I used to attend CAPS meetings.  Gang activity was becoming rampant to the point where the gang bangers would attend the meetings wearing their colors in defiance of police presence.

One particular meeting became very heated and someone accused my neighbor of being a racist.

My neighbor slowly rose to her feet and said in a calm voice, "After living with you in this neighborhood and getting to know you, I don't like you and if that makes me a racist, so be it."

You could have heard a pin drop in that hall and I don't remember what happened after that.  My neighbor and I stopped attending CAPS meetings altogether.  Attendance of the gang bangers with their mommies defending them made those meetings a joke.

The word racism has been thrown around so much in recent weeks, it's hard to remember what the real definition of it actually is.

I'll never forget that one evening where my neighbor stood up and redefined it.
