The Wedding at Cana

The Wedding at Cana
Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337), Cappella Scrovegni a Padova, Life of Christ, Marriage at Cana

In today's Gospel, Mary and Jesus attend a wedding in Cana, and at the prodding of His Mother, Jesus, performs His first miracle.

John's retelling of the story is a bit dry.  Mary says simply, "They have no wine." and Jesus' response is "Woman, how does your concern affect me?  My hour has not yet come."  Our Lord does seem a bit irritated with his mother.

Since I have two sons who are approaching 30, the exchange between Mary and Jesus made me smile.  My sons would not call me "Woman."  Their response would be more like, "Mom, I'll get to it."  The sooner the conversation is over, the sooner they can get out of the situation!

Perhaps Jesus was trying to put off the inevitable just a bit longer.  He knew what was coming.  His mother didn't.

With the start of His ministry and all the symbolism in this Gospel, Mary's words reverberate throughout history:  "Do whatever He tells you."
