Not much is known about St. Luke. According to Bert Ghezzi's Voices of the Saints, "Luke lived a long life without marrying and that he died at age eight-four," but those "facts" appeared centuries after his death.
Luke was a great story teller and meticulous about his facts. The Gospel of St. Luke, was the one Gospel that drew me to the bible growing up.
Today's Gospel reminds me of today's political climate. We are nearing the presidential election and there are days when I feel like one of those "lambs among wolves."
Today's Collect, gives me courage:
Lord God, who chose Saint Luke to reveal by his preaching and writings the mystery of your love for the poor, grant that those who already glory in your name may persevere as one heart and one soul and that all nations may merit to see your salvation Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
