"Because of your little faith.
Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed,
you will say to this mountain,
"Move from here to there," and it will move.
Nothing will be impossible for you." - from Today's Gospel Matthew 17:14-20
When I was in grammar school one of my friends wore a tiny pendant with the mustard seed encased around her neck. She would often quote this scripture. I was more fascinated with the piece of jewelry than the words she spoke.
I never imagined being where I am today in life, much less converting to Catholicism. When I was younger, I wanted to be a singer and play guitar. When I first met my husband, he had a band and he asked me to sing and play guitar with them. As time went on, we got away from that and after our kids were grown, we started getting opportunities to sing in church.
At first I was content to play guitar and then I started taking vocal lessons just for fun, but I always thought of myself as the rhythm guitar player and the back-up singer. Then things changed.
One day at Mass, none of the readers showed up. Father asked if I would do it. I ended up doing all the readings and leading the congregation in song. I was one multi-tasking woman that day. Fortunately my husband was prepared to sing the Psalm.
And now I'm learning to sing in Latin. My husband has been teaching me Panis Angelicus and the other night I sang the whole thing through without mistakes! I literally jumped up and down and did the Happy Dance!
When I saw today's Gospel, I had to smile. Having never been raised in any kind of faith and to be where I am now, is extraordinary!
