Reading Julia Keller's article in Sunday's (8/28) Tribune brought a smile to my face. Julia is the Trib's cultural critic and writes primarily book reviews.
Julia is hanging on to her DTB (dead tree book) collection and has hauled it around with her every time she moves. Just thinking about that makes me want to crawl into a cardboard box with my nook and surrender!
I went digital last year when Number 1 son surprised me with a nook 1st edition. My husband and I packed up ten boxes of books and dropped them off at one of those drop off boxes. It was such a freeing experience! Of course, most of those books were his, but my collection was reduced considerably (his, not so much!).
I have resisted buying DTB's ever since. Unfortunately not everything comes in digital form and there are a lot of books that are simply out of print.
One of my favorite authors growing up was Taylor Caldwell. The late actor, Richard Jordan played in a made for TV mini series of Captains and the Kings in 1976. I found several of Ms. Caldwell's books still in print, but none are available digitally.
Last week I walked into Ravenswood Used Books 4626 N. Lincoln (773-593-9166). I've been there before and walked out empty handed. However, this time, as I was walking past the store I saw To Hell On A Fast Horse: The Untold Story of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett in the window. I was doomed!
I have a new love in reading. The Western genre. I don't know how it happened, but I started reading Westerns and Civil War books. I immediately went into the store and picked it up. $6.00. It's $9.99 in ebook form. Done deal.
So I added it to my downsized collection. Sitting on the floor next to me is what's left of the DTBs:
By Taylor Caldwell: Dear and Glorious Physician, I Judas and Testimony of Two Men
Voices of the Saints by Bert Ghezzi
Catholic Women's Devotional Bible (NRSV) (I have an older version)
Daily and Sunday Roman Missal (older versions)
Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover (I use part of the exercises and when I do them, they work!)
To Sleep with the Angels - The Story of a Fire (the story of the 1958 fire at the Our Lady of the Angels School here in Chicago) This is painful to read, but it's so beautifully written!
Remembrances of the Angels - 50th Anniversary Reminiscences of the Fire No One Can Forget - I haven't read this yet.
An Exorcist Tells His Story - I haven't read this yet either.
Come Be My Light by Mother Teresa - I've read part of this one.
50 Best Girlfriends Getaways in North America (from the BFF)
That's not bad. And I use most of them nearly every day when I research for my blog. Now if all the books from my nook were on the floor, I'd have a problem.
411 and counting!
