When I get up in the morning, my routine begins with coffee and my laptop. I check my email first and then my Facebook page. My second email gave me the stunning news that Osama bin Laden had been killed by the CIA!
Do you remember where you were on September 11, 2001 when our nation was attacked? My memory is a little odd because I woke up that morning to discover my car had been stolen! I had called the police and was told an officer would be out some time that day to make out a report, but once the towers fell, an officer came out quickly. I owned a van and at that point everything was suspicious.
My husband's cousin had come over and we were chatting about possibly going for breakfast on my front porch. My neighbor came out and asked if we heard about the plane that crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. We went into the house to watch the news and were horrified as we saw the second plane crash - live!
Instinctively, we knew something was very wrong. We cancelled our plans. She went home to check on her brother who was flying out that morning. After watching the second plane hit, it all seemed surreal. How could this happen on American soil?
One of the memories that I have, that still reverberates in my head to this day is my daughter asking, "Will they attack Chicago Mommy?" She was ten years old at the time and she went to a Catholic school. They had spent their day talking about what happened and praying. I told her that the terrorists had no interest in Chicago and that they had accomplished what they wanted, but I wasn't so sure that our city wasn't going to be next.
As the years have gone by, I always felt as a nation, we had become complacent again. Now with Bin Laden dead, do we dare to think we will never be attacked again? Or is someone else lurking in the background to take over Bin Laden's role?
If you lost someone on 9/11 this may or may not bring you closure, but as a nation, I pray that we have some peace.
