In a letter to Fr. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina, Francis Cardinal George suspended the controversial priest. Apparently the Cardinal is finally fed up with his wayward priest and is giving him time to think over his actions and his priesthood.
In a stunning statement, the Cardinal tells the good father, "If you now formally leave the Catholic Church and her priesthood, it's your choice and no one else's. You are not a victim of anyone or anything other than your own statements."
Holy crap! Oops! Sorry! I always felt that Fr. Pfleger would leave the Catholic Church eventually, but I also thought that he was pushing the Cardinal's buttons so that it looks like he was forced out. I blogged
about this not too long ago.
When I first heard about the suspension on the evening news, my reaction was, "Holy crap!" And then my next comment was, "The Cardinal must have really gotten ticked off!" Okay, I didn't say "ticked," but I couldn't have been more surprised. I really thought Fr. Pfleger would walk away on his own.
So now Fr. Pfleger has a lot to think about ... and a lot of publicity to gain. Which, despite his claims to want to preach the Gospel, is what he truly has wanted all along.
I wonder how long it will take for Fr. Pfleger to preach at Rev. Wright's church or Louis Farrakhan's or extol the evils of the Catholic Church.
But perhaps the real tragedy in this, is those who might follow him out of our faith.
Those are the people we have to pray for.
