... And Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. (Luke 2:19, Catholic Women's Devotional Bible NRSV)
Today's readings tell us how the shepherds tell Mary and Joseph what they heard about their child. As young parents, they must have been overwhelmed in more ways then one. But Mary treasured these words and thought about them. The New American Bible's translation says that she kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.
When my children were very little, I would try and live in that moment where I would make a point of remembering rocking them to sleep, singing silly songs to them or that moment when they stare at you, wide-eyed with wonder and love. Mary may have been already storing away those memories, not knowing what was to come. Maybe those moments gave her great comfort after her Son's death and maybe at times it just emphasized her grief even more. We don't know.
I treasure the memories I have. I'm glad I made a point to remember those moments. I always encourage new moms to write down the crazy things that pop out of a toddler's mouth or to write down that quiet moment you shared as you held your child to you at the end of a busy day.
Treasure the words, ponder them in your heart, keep the memories close at hand and reflect on them in your heart. Take a moment and honor the Mother of us all.
