"Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources." Luke 8:1-3 (The Catholic Women's Devotional Bible NRSV)
"... who provided for them out of their resources." In other words the women had the cash! This was a little tidbit I just recently stumbled on. In biblical times women had no rights. Women were not seen in public, couldn't speak to a man in public, could not be taught the teachings of the Torah, couldn't follow a rabbi and they couldn't make ethical decisions without the supervision of a father or husband! (Reference: Women Are Called by Mary Ellen Aschcroft, Catholic Women's Devotional Bible NRSV p. 1360). Even if you were married to a man of means and stature in the community you could be accused of anything and be killed for it!
But the women who followed Jesus had "resources." Perhaps they had inherited from a deceased husband or there were no sons in the family and they were the last heir. Jesus called them to be disciples. Can you imagine? In this environment he broke every rule and called them to follow him! So they broke from society and took their resources with them. Talk about going out of your comfort zone!
But that's what Jesus does. He draws us out to follow him and take a different path. He might cure you to change your life and then beckon you or he may beckon you and show you a different lifestyle that you may not have considered.
So pack up those resources and go!
