Its 1pm and right now and I haven't been to bed yet. I've been up making beats for my album and writing for my upcoming mixtape. That's not a problem for me, though. I do the insomniac thing all the time. But don't worry. I'm a gold medalist in sleeping when I really want to be. I pull all nighters when I need to get caught up on work. Its getting to the point in my career where I have to be very careful with the way I use my time.
As many of you may know, there is a huge music festival coming up in Austin, Texas called South By Southwest (SXSW). Independent and major label musicians from all over the world go to Austin and perform/watch concerts/gallavant for a few days. I went last year, and I took my background singers my dj, and my dj's girlfriend. It was an excellent networking opportunity; I met my manager at SXSW last year. However, I have 2 events going on around the same time, and I can't decide if traveling for both of them is necessary. So I am relying on you, my friends who are practical and get 6-8 hours of sleep a night, to help me decide what to do. I trust your judgement. Mine is questionable right now. LoL.
Here's what I did at South By Southwest last year. Don't judge me.
I am currently finishing my mixtape, which is slotted to drop on March 19th. My marketing team is in New York, and I have to go out there shortly after my mixtape is finished to shoot a couple promo videos and take a few meetings. If I got to SXSW, I have to leave on March 19th at the latest because I have 2 shows scheduled on March 20th. It's NOT an all expenses paid performance. I'd actually be spending my own money to take myself & 2 background singers to Texas AND get a room AND acquire transportation. I'm debating wether it makes sense to go or not because I need to be in New York NO LATER THAN April 1st to do the promo stuff. Honestly, I kinda wanna focus on my mixtape & finishing my album. However, I understand the importance of doing events like this as well. What should I do?
I have a million people encouraging me to go to Texas. but I'm still undecided. I kinda don't want to go, but everyone keeps reminding me of what a great networking opportunity it is. Plus my choreographer and back up singer, Jahmilah, will probably make an attempt on my life if I tell her we're not going. I don't know. Is it worth it? I'm rarely this conflicted about anything thing, I'm typically very decisive.
If I could go and not spend a ton of money then I guess it would be okay. Usually when an out of town show comes up I just say "Screw it!" and book tickets without a care in the world. But airfare is disgusting right now! Look at this:
My little brother is really into road trips and he's never been to Texas, so I spoke with him about driving down and he said he might be game. If somebody wanted to drive down, I'd totally let them come do the cool, exclusive stuff with me & let them crash in my room. That would be optimal. I don't mind road trips, as long as people drive he speed limit and everybody agrees to keep their shoes on in the car.
So... any advice, suggestions, or feedback on this issue would be appreciated. Preferably from people who are more pragmatic than I am. If you know what the word pragmatic means, then you're EXACTLY who I'd love to get advice from. I look forward to hearing from you. Sooner than later, I hope.
