I'm Ready for the Spotlight: Preparing for my 1st music video shoot

Two to three hour dance rehearsals, almost daily. Workouts with a personal trainer. Wardrobe fittings and fashion consultations. Pouring over make-up look books and scouring the city for a waist length studded leather vest. Low fat, low calorie, and low salt meals, 3 to 5 times a day. This has been my life for the past few weeks. Last night I had a dream about watching cartoons and eating giant bowl of cereal. A girl can dream, right?

I didn't exactly know what to expect when I decided it was time to shoot a music video. I thought it would be cute to have my background singers and myself doing our lil' dance the way we always do it onstage, but in 2 different outfits. However, now that I'm shooting my video with a director who's shot for Grammy award winning artists and done work thats been nominated for BET's Hip-Hop Video of the Year, suddenly my "lil' video shoot" has escalated into being quite a big deal. I'm just trying to keep up.

My upcoming video is taking precedence over everything else in my life right now, including finishing my album thats due out in March. While I resent not having time to work on music right now, I'm excited to see how my video is gonna turn out. The song I'm shooting the video for is called Don't Say No. Its a sexy, pop, techno-ish dance record that I released earlier this year. When my friend Chris Adams heard it, he instantly loved it and came up with a crazy concept and the perfect filthy, gritty location for the video. Him and his partner Blaq's company, Impakt Studio, have turned my video into a major production. Even if you aren't familiar with Impakt Studio's name, you might be familiar with their work. They've shot music videos for several well known recording artists. My personal favorite is one that garnered national award nominations, its Lupe Fiasco's debut video for his song Kick Push.

So now that we have the concept and the choreography and the location in place, I've been spreading the word around about the shoot. I'm inviting all Chicagoans who aren't camera shy to come out and join in the fun. The vibe of the video is gonna be really similar to my live performances, so I'm encouraging people to dress as strangely as possible. All attention hungry, over the top future icons of America will be well received... and if they look cool enough they'll probably get a cameo :o)

I'll continue to update you on the goings on as the count down to my video shoot continues. Hopefully my background dancers will stop being late to rehearsals so that I won't have to vent about them in my blog. However, I don't reallllly anticipate that happening, so expect to hear some bitching about that within the near future. Like after our next rehearsal, for example. Insert ugly bitchie face here.
