I'm Grateful For Granny: Thanksgiving wasn't a total bust.

I'm conflicted. I want to blog about my experiences on Thanksgiving, but in doing so I might say some things that will offend a few people. I want to talk about my $40 meal from Karyn's. I want to talk about the family dinner at my mom's house. And what I ended up doing at the end of the night. (That part is a lonnng story.)

However, for the sake of saving face, I'm keeping my mouth shut about the negative stuff and focusing on the positives. Like spending time with my grandma and giving her her world debut... via the internet. You know I had to shoot a short video of my granny. She's one of the few people for whom I'm unfailingly grateful.

All things considered, I had a good holiday. I had my vegan meal from Karyn's Cooked and... ummm... it made me wish that I had cooked :o( Its not that the food wasn't good. Here are the reasons why I was slightly disappointed:

  • There was no cornbread stuffing. In the advertisement it said there would be cornbread stuffing, but what I got was a little bit under half a cup of bread crumb dressing that had a negligible amount of cornmeal in it. That was a huge buzz killer.
  • The food was pretty good, but the portions could've been better. For $40, I expected some pretty sizable portions. I don't like it that I ended up having to go to Jewel at the end of the night because I got hungry again after a few hours. That was not ok.
  • My sweet potatoes were slightly undercooked. I've had sweet potatoes from Karyn's before, and they were much softer. I suspect they were made in a hurry. Unlucky me.
The food was tasty and all... but considering the fact that I'm vegan and it was all that I could eat, I was hoping for a bit more. Will I pay $40 again on Christmas for a holiday meal? Helllllllll no. I'm gonna get off my lazy ass and cook. For $40 I can buy enough groceries to feast like a queen.
Another positive experience that I had on Thanksgiving was having the chance to spend a bit of time with my grandma. Although she began feeling really sick again recently, she was in good spirits and had a really nice time. Thats all that matters to me. Check her out. Its the Granny Bird world debut!

The time I spent with my family was good. They talked me into showing them the ruff cut of my video for "Don't Say No" (My granny absolutely loved it!) I was slightly saddened because the person who I wanted to see it the most refused to come look at it. She said she was too busy straightening up to come look. As if the trash and shit wouldn't have been there after she looked at my 3 minute long video. And everybody noticed it. But whatever.
Later on, I ended up hanging at a close friend's house with his family and getting involved in a very heated Uno tournament. I won the last round, but only after taking a thorough beating in the first hour and a half of play. We actually played with 2 decks of Uno cards mixed together! It was nuts. And it put the smile back on my face. So I guess my holiday turned out pretty good after all. We can't always control the things that happen in our lives. Sometimes focusing on the positive is the hardest thing to do. But we owe it to ourselves to be happy in life, and honing in on good things beats dwelling on negativity by a long shot.
