September 30, 2017 changed our lives forever. We lost my step dad after a complication from a surgery.
Unexpected. Shocking. Heartbreaking.
Jim was a wonderful man. He had a great laugh, loved my sister and I like his own, and loved my mom with his entire heart and soul.
And if that's not enough, he did SO much for his community.
Shortly after moving to Glen Ellyn, he quickly engulfed himself in the community. He became involved in the 4th of July Committee where he served for over 30 years and also volunteered for a variety of other groups, including the Central DuPage Kiwanis Club, the Glen Ellyn Jaycees, and Public Action to Deliver Shelter, where he cooked food for the homeless. He continued to do many of these great things until his passing.
On October 10, 2018 - what would have been his 68th birthday - we announced the establishment of a foundation in his memory - the JWR Foundation, Keep Doing Great Things.
We choose this name for one reason, and one reason only. Every time Jim saw any of his grandsons (he has 5) before he left he would tell them "keep doing great things".
This foundation in his memory will award annual college scholarships to the two high schools in Glen Ellyn - a community where Jim lived and volunteered in for over 30 years. We'll be awarding money to young adults who are "doing great things" in their community like Jim was. We know this will be a great way to keep his memory and community involvement alive and hopefully inspire the next generation to give back to the community.
We started this Foundation out of love for Jim and the determination to not only keep his memory alive in the Glen Ellyn community that he loved so much, but we wanted to recognize the next generation of community leaders for their hard work and volunteerism.
We are happy to report our first fundraiser - the Great Things 2019 Golf Outing - raised over $10,000! We were pleasantly surprised and look forward to having our 2nd annual fundraiser - again at the Village Links in Glen Ellyn (we are doing our best to keep our events local to the Glen Ellyn community) on Friday, July 10, 2020.
But you don't have to wait until July to support our mission! We are having a fun painting party fundraiser at Bottle & Bottega in Glen Ellyn. Attendees will enjoy snacks, wine, water while they paint a beautiful sunflower (Jim's favorite!) to hang in their home.
And of course we except donations any time on our website - and we also have apparel with the simple Keep Doing Great Things logo on the left chest. Check it out - purchase and wear some of it to help spread our mission!
Jim lives on in the hearts of the many people he connected with – not only through his volunteering but in all walks of his life. Our 100% volunteer run organization is determined to raise funds with the hopes of ultimately establishing scholarships dedicated to community service volunteers and projects in Jim’s memory to encourage those to “Keep Doing Great Things”.
But until then, Keep Doing Great Things to make it a beautiful day!
