Beat the Beast

Beat the Beast
Stop Beast Mode. Stop the Seahwaks.

I don't want to write about the Bears offense and what they need to do in order to beat Seattle. Just thinking about Caleb Hanie under center depresses me, and trying to place trust in Marion Barber makes my head hurt. Sure, I could lie and tell myself that Johnny Knox has more magic up his sleeve. Unfortunately, I'm no idiot. I know he's just the rabbit and without an apt magician we'll never see Knox pop out of the top hat.

This leaves me two options: focus defense or focus on special teams. I wish I could talk about Devin Hester and how he'll once again prove why he's the greatest return man of all time, but even the mighty "Mister Ridiculous" has been more human than usual since Cutler went down.

By default, the defense wins out for this post.

We needed them to win the game in Denver. They put forth a Herculean effort and were well on their way to pulling it off until... well... Barber decided it just wouldn't be in good taste to just let the clock run out. Maybe it was a matter of disgustingly good sportsmanship or maybe he's as sharp as a marble. I'll let you decide. What I won't do is re-hash what happened after he stepped out of bounds. The wound still stings.

But the healing can begin this Sunday if Brian Urlacher, Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs and co. man up and put The Beast back in his cage. He's the reason the Seahawks have gone 4-2 over their past six games. It's not Tavaris Jackson. It's not Pete Carroll. It's Marshawn "you sure as shit ain't tackling me on first contact" Lynch.

It won't be an easy task. It's going to take wrapping up and ganging up and (are you listening Peanut?) going for the tackle instead of the strip. But it can be done. It must be done. Stop Lynch and you stop the Seahawks and you stop the bleeding.

Unless, of course, we actually have to score some points to win. But this is football. You don't need an offense to win games, right?

  • Nice work. Good thing for the Bears, (I believe) they're first against the run since they began they're five game win streak.

The Chicago Bears need all four phases (offense, defense, special teams and the fans) of the game to work together to pave the way to victory. This is the unofficial 4th Phase blog. You can follow the blog on Twitter, @4thPhase or #4thPhase.
