Does The New Kickoff Rule Hurt Or Help Hester?

devin hesterThe 4th Phase was not happy when the NFL decided to move up the kickoff this past offseason. The 3rd Phase, special teams, is such an important part of the game for the Bears and the new rule would result into deeper kickoffs, more touchbacks, less returns and less kick returns for touchdowns.

While the number of touchbacks are significantly up, Devin Hester still attempts to run kicks out of the end zone. This season, he is averaging 27.7 per kickoff return, the second highest of his career. His highest average was last season, 35.6 KOR on 12 returns. Hester already has 14 returns.
