I've written about why Soldier Field needs to switch the grass playing surface to FieldTurf. For one, it's not grass. It's slop. Grass doesn't grow in the colder months. Two, the Chicago Park District holds other events in Soldier Field all year including during the season. Lastly, it slows down the Bears.
This era's Bears are not your grandfather's Bears. Sure they are still the Monsters of the Midway but this era of football is not only about toughness, it's also about speed.
Last week, on the Waddle and Silvy Show, Brian Urlacher voiced his opinion about the grass at Soldier Field.
"a disaster. We complain about it all the time. .... I don't know what's wrong with our field. Every week they've resodded it. They had a soccer game there, or they had nine high school games in two days. It's always something."
"We're a fast defense. You put us on that FieldTurf eight home games a year? We're going to be really fast. You put (Julius) Peppers on turf? (Devin) Hester, with those cuts on turf? (Johnny) Knox? All those guys. Matt (Forte)? We're going to be a little better, I think. Faster."
For those clamoring about playing on turf isn't Bears' football, the GOAT team, the 85 Bears, played on AstroTurf. That team, too, was fast.
Look at the cold weather teams that play on FieldTurf - Patriots, Ravens, Jets and the Giants. Are these teams any less than the NFL's elite?
