Could an artificial pancreas be the future of diabetes? Thanks to my friend and fellow Chicagonow blogger Holly Lipshcultz for sending this article to me. Researchers are working on a device that not only constantly monitors blood glucose levels but will automatically determine the appropriate amount of insulin to inject.
This could lead to easier lives for diabetics who have to keep a close eye on this fickle disease. There are already monitors that keep an eye on levels constantly, but diabetics still have to plug in the appropriate amount of insulin. The artificial pancreas is unique because it will use algorithms to determine how much insulin to give in the future based on patterns. This will prevent issues from happening before they start.
One thing I need to do is participate in studies. I need to be at the forefront of the new technology and be a part of the future of beating this disease. Just having the pump has been a step in the right direction. It is not perfect…yet, but it will be. I am learning something new every day and I am excited that the medical world is excited to make living with diabetes easier.
