As I write this, I am sitting on the floor in my three-year old Cole’s room, staring him down to go to sleep at naptime. It seems this is the only way to get him to settle down and sleep. And he does still need the nap because he does not go to sleep until 8:30pm at night and is up at 6am every morning. When he finally settles down to sleep, he will take a nap for 2-3 hours which also tells me he needs it.
At naptime, Cole just plays around and gets out of bed. I start with telling him to stay in bed and go to sleep, but then catch him reading books or playing with toys. After two warnings, I start taking away blankets and stuff animals. Soon his whole bed is empty, but he still will not settle.
The only thing that works is for me to sit there and tell him to settle down and go to sleep. I know this pattern is not right, but I am at a loss for what else to do. My normal discipline is time out, but that’s what he wants …to get out of bed.
Nothing seems to faze Cole. He is not attached to any one toy or blanket so to take stuff away from him is useless. I am at my wits end. I really don’t know what to do besides just sit here typing and give him the ‘evil eye’ till he goes to sleep.
Any advice? Oh and by the way, as I end this entry, he is snoring away right now. Ay Mama!!!
