Earworms-or-Get That *&! Song Outta My Head!

Earworms-or-Get That *&! Song Outta My Head!

We've all had it happen. You walk around all day with a song in your head. But no, it's not the light-hearted, I'm so happy-look at me singing a song. It's more like- get this song out of my head, I cannot stop singing it!

For me, to exorcise the demon, I have to listen to that song if I like it, otherwise I have to get another song stuck in my head if I don't. Either way, I drive myself crazy.

My Dad is the king of this. He'll often email to tell me what song is stuck in his head (which often then gets it stuck in my head!)

My poor kids. I sing. A lot. At least I CAN sing, in that I can hold a tune, but I sing all the time. In the car recently, I had a song stuck in my head ('Walk' by The Foo Fighters) which I sang over & over until Sam asked me to stop. It had been in his head too and everytime I sang it, it would start in his again... poor kid, it's heriditary.

The question is how do these songs get there in the first place? I can hear 100 songs on the radio and nothing. Several commercial jingles,  and nada.

Why do some songs just get stuck?

What usually happens to me is Scott will sing a part of a song about something to me, and next thing I know, I'm singing the chorus, but wondering why I'm singing it (usually to his great satisfaction- "Ha! Gotcha!").

I asked my beloved Facebook family for their earworm songs, here's what I got.

My Mom Nancy: I had this song in my head all day. Finally realized it was the theme song to Leave it to Beaver! Don't know what that means. Senility?

Keri: All the time! A recent incident had "We Don't Have to Take our Clothes Off (to Have a Good Time)". Thank you Meadows  Pool lifegaurds :/

Amy: Okay, I'll tell you, but you can't make fun of my taste. The "La-la-la" part of that song "Tonight, tonight" they keep playing on the radio. "Uh-oh-oh-oh stuck like glue. You and me, baby, we're stuck like glue." And finally, "Hey why don't we go somewhere only we know." That's been this week.

Matthew: why was the RickRolling epidemic so painful? because certain songs, once they start... you can't stop em. (Confession: I had no idea what he meant, now thanks to him and Google, I am singing that cursed song- see link if you're in the dark too.)

Laura: on our family vacation in Italy, I kept singing "Total eclipse of the Heart". Turn around bright eyes...

Tad: "you don't tug on superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the old lone ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim"

Cindy: Went to Catholic school and on days we started with mass, I always had those church songs in my head for the rest of the day. But these days it's all about Cher (Shoop Shoop song) or Lady Gaga (Bad Romance). I loop the chorus...over and over and over again. "Whoa-oa-oa-oa-oa..."

Sue-recently returned from Disney:  It's a Small World After All...repeat an extreme number of times.

Kathleen: When Michael Jackson died it was "Man in the Mirror". It was on everywhere and stuck in my head forever!

Anyone else got a song stuck in their heads just from this?
