27 Dresses

I've always been a girlie girl, no doubt about it.  Ever since I can remember I've been saving all my cute outfits in a huge trunk.  From mini skirts to prom dresses and everything in between. When I was pregnant with Lucia, my sister Lisa and my friend Khadine used to tease me by saying things like You are having a girl?  I bet she'll be your opposite!  I bet she won't be into the girlie stuff.  I was totally fine with it, I only wanted Lucia to be her own person.  Who cares if she didn't want to use my old stuff?  I just wanted her to have it.  Period.

Now, let's rewind to my thirteenth birthday.   I was at my Grandmother's house when all of a sudden she called me; Nina, come here my love, I want you to try something on.  Something that I've been saving for you. Oh my goodness, I've never seen anything like it before.  It was the most beautiful dress you can possibly imagine; the kind of dress that will never go out of style.  It was love at first try.  The dress used to be my Mother's and now it belonged to me. Every time I wear this dress, I get a compliment.  I call it my pick me up dress; always makes me feel (and look) like a rock star.   It's been twenty years since my Grandmother gave it to me and I still wear it at least once a year.  It is always a huge hit.  So, what does this dress has to do with my hoarding obsession? Everything! I would have loved for my Mother to save all of her beautiful dresses for my sister and I, but it didn't happen.  I guess that, in the back of my mind, I always saw myself with a daughter and with all the ever changing fashion trends, I figured she would have been in heaven with my 90's fashion trunk!

Now, let's fast forward to Lucia's first three years of life.  At the beginning, she hated all the girlie stuff, couldn't care less about her hair and absolutely despised dressing up...Until after we got back from our Baltic cruise last Summer.  After a week in the hospital, I finally got to see my children at the Copenhagen International Airport.  The first thing coming out of Lucia's mouth was Mami, I love your purse! What?  What happened to my little girl?  She was even wearing lipstick!  Ever since that day, she's been obsessed with pink, outfits, makeup and playing dress up.  Be careful what you secretly wish for!  I guess that the 90's fashion trunk will be more than just 27 Halloween dresses.  Ay Mama!

Today, I'll be sharing with you my Mother's perfect spinach salad recipe.  Great for the Summer time!  Enjoy.

-Fresh spinach (half of a wt. 9 oz bag)

-1 cup cherry tomatoes sliced in halves

-1/2 cup Shitake mushrooms sliced

-1/3 chopped mango

-1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese

-2 Tbsp. toasted pine nuts

-2 Tbsp. chopped cilantro

-1/4 cup garbanzo beans

For dressing:

-4 oz. extra virgin olive oil

-2 oz. Balsamic vinegar

-2 mashed garlic cloves

-1 tsp. Dijon mustard

-1 tsp. fruit preserves

-Salt & pepper to taste

Mix all vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains together in a big bowl.  In a small bowl, mix all ingredients for the dressing.  Add to the salad right before serving.  Buen provecho!

  • Real fun & cool.....especially that dress of your mother's....when would you estimate that dress was made? Enjoy all the "pink"....(I know you are)....none of that in our house- 2 boys- oh well....real fun to buy gifts for girls now- and maybe nieces (hopefully soon) & grandaughters eventually (way down the road)!! :)

P.S. Hope you're all having a good summer!
