My family is slowly taking over all the holidays. I have already blogged about how both my grandfather's death and our signing the paperwork to pursue Dylan's adoption happened on Valentine's Day and how my grandmother passed away on New Years' Day. Now my brother - whose birthday falls on Groundhog's Day - has welcomed his baby girl on March 17, 2011, St. Patrick's Day!
I cannot even begin to put into words how thrilled I am for Jadit and Arleane. My brother and I have always been very close. Growing up, our friends always expressed their amazement at how well we got along. Jadit never minded if I tagged along with him and his friends, and I became kind of a mascot for his group of friends growing up. When I was in high school and college, we used to hit the town together, staying out until all hours of the night. After I graduated college, Bill and I decided to move to Los Angeles. One of the reasons for our move was because my brother lived there and we wanted to be somewhere near family.
Seeing the special relationship I had with my brother, Bill asked him to be the best man at our wedding, which meant the world to me. Two years after Bill and I got married, Jadit called me up one day and asked me what we were doing that weekend. When I said we didn't have plans, he informed me that he and Arleane had decided to go to Las Vegas and get married, and asked if we would like to come along as well. Of course we did! Bill and I were the only people present at their wedding, so we signed as witnesses, and we were very touched to have been included on that special occasion.
Despite the fact that I am four and a half years younger than Jadit, I was the first of us to get married, and the first to become a parent. We got the call from our adoption agency telling us we had received our invitation to travel on February 1, 2008, the day before my brother's birthday, so I joked around that I got him a nephew for his birthday.
Dylan adores his Tio and Titi. Jadit has an easy way with children and they all gravitate towards him, and - between you and me - I think Dylan has a little crush on Arleane. He's always talking about her, saying he wants to go to Puerto Rico and go to the beach with Titi.
It was shortly after our camping trip in Seven Seas, Fajardo that we found out Arleane was pregnant. We were thrilled! Despite the fact that my brother never expressed any great, aching desire to become a father, I knew that if the situation were to present itself, he would immediately and naturally fall into the role. It has been wonderful to see this transformation in the last few months. That little baby stole his heart the moment he found out about her, and now that she is here he is completely enthralled by her. It is a beautiful thing to see.
Welcome to the world, Kaori! We love you and can't wait to meet you!
