Concerned parents want to know

It has been a concern of mine since Amelia and I have been paying attention to children's television.  Elmo has their picture on his wall but rarely mentions them.  Max and Ruby have a family portrait, but they clearly live alone.  Even Handy Manny only has an Abuelito. And like any good single Latino working man, he should at least be living with his Mama until he finally shacks up with the hardware store owner he clearly has the hots for.
Apparently I'm not the only one having these issues. Below is a conversation between two friends of mine on my Facebook Wall, after I mentioned I was sick and tired of watching Wonder Pets. These are 2 Dads, so this clearly is not a Mother thing.

Where are these baby animals' parents? Sometimes I think Linny, Tuck, and Ming Ming should just call DCFS.

That's too funny. I'm always looking for Wubzy's parents too. You never see them. There ARE adults in Wuzzleburg, but you don't see Wubzy's parents. I mean, that's a big house he lives in. Where does he get his money? Did he inherit that 'W' Mansion? I know there's a Datelline Episode waiting to be told!

Oh, if we're going to get into the rest of the Nick Jr. universe then poor Ana's status will never get a rest. Max and Ruby's home has long descended into utter chaos, Ruby is a manipulative control freak with no structure in her life. Max destroys everything he touches, and their house is tidy only in appearance. It is haunted by the unspoken loss...See More

What is my beef with all this?  Are parents not important to the cartoon world?  Who do they think is sitting at 5AM next to their target audience?  A tired Mom or Dad who would like to be portrayed at least as a constant presence in these characters lives.  I want Amelia to be independent but not afraid that I'll leave her at Sesame Street with the monsters or that Abu Tita or Grandma won't take her in.
By the way, don't get me started on Disney and the way they kill every mother in every movie: Bambi, Nemo, Little Mermaid, Cinderella.  Ay Mama!

  • OMG this is SO odd, so SO true. Why are we Moms so vilified or ignored completely in the world of cartoons!? Awesome Ana...and thought provoking.

  • Yes, don't get me started on Disney, either. Killing moms off has been a long time pet peeve of mine! And yes, it does seem that all these cartoon characters are reverting back to the life of Pippi Longstocking. Albeit fun for the kids, not really teaching practical daily life or otherwise.
