Dear Mel,
Yesterday my mom got mad at me and broke my straightener... I would leave it out and she was afraid it would catch on fire. So she got really mad she broke it. My hair is super curly and I used to straighten it every day, I hate having to wear it curly. My mom says she isn't gonna buy me one anytime soon. What can I do to convince her or show her I won't do it again?
-Curls
Dear Curls,
Hi, my name is Melanie and I'm a recovering hair-straightener-aholic. Yep, I was addicted. My hair, like yours, is naturally curly. But every other seventh grade girl had stick-straight hair and I was desperate to fit in. So I woke up early every morning and flat-ironed my hair until it fried. Five years later, I'm proud to say that I've overcome my addiction. I no longer feel the need to have perfectly straight hair every single day. Yes, I do flat-iron it once in a while, but I've grown to love my curls.
I know this isn't the advice you want to hear, but here goes: Embrace your curls; ditch the straightener.
You shouldn't have to fix up your hair every day just to fit in with all the other straight-haired girls. It isn't worth it. Curly hair is beautiful, too.
So forget about your straightener for a little and start loving on your curly locks. They deserve it.
-Mel
