SB Dilemma: Rage in MX or stay home

Dear Mel,

All of my friends are planning our senior spring break trip. They're most likely going to Mexico. My parents said that I can go but I'm a little hesitant about it for a few reasons. First, I know that all they're going to do is party. I drink, but not a ton. I like to do it only once in a while. Also, I recently got accepted into U of Wisconsin, which is my dream school. I do NOT want to make a mistake and get in trouble on this trip, because that would jeopardize my college career at Madison. And lastly, my best friend isn't going on the trip and I feel bad for her. I know I shouldn't stay home just because she is, but it's definitely a factor. What do you think I should do? I'm running out of time to decide!

Dear MX or Bust,

To be honest, I think you've already answered your own question. It seems to me like you don't really want to go on this trip. If you did, then you wouldn't be writing to me about it. Let's look at the facts: Your BFF isn't going, you don't want to drink every day and night, and you definitely don't want to hurt your future by making a mistake. It looks like the cons outweigh the pros. As fun as a trip to MX with your friends sounds, it's ultimately a matter of what you want to do. Take out a piece of notebook paper and make a list of the pros and cons. (Or you can buy one of those fancy pro/con notepads. Yeah, I have one.) And remember not to base your decision off your friends' constant pressuring: "Come on, you have to go! Everyone's going!" Be your own person and decide for yourself.
