You, him, and her

Dear Mel,

I've been in love with this guy for a long time. I've known him for a few years and he's really just amazing.. There's just one problem: He likes my best friend and she likes him back. But she doesn't like him nearly as much as I do... Trust me. I know it's only a matter of time before they become even closer. Is there anything I can do??

Dear Upset,

This is a toughie. You don't want to hurt your best friend's feelings, but you also don't want her to have what (or should I say, who) you want.
Here are 2 things you can do:
It's a sneaky plot, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures. Start dressing up every time you see this guy. Mascara, blush, heels, the works. Make "flirt" your middle name. Don't follow him around or anything. Talk to him a little, but not too much. Try as hard as you can to secretly outdo your friend without her knowing. It's okay as long as she doesn't find out.
OR...
You can be honest with your friend and tell her how you feel about the guy. If she's really your BFF, then she'll back off. Because that's just what friends do, right?
Hopefully, this guy will realize that you are the right girl for him. Until then, remember to be confident and be yourself.

  • Umm... this girl needs a hobby.. one that doesn't involve chasing some guy around.

Which hobby would you suggest? Knitting, perhaps?

This is a tough one...at one point does Upset have to be the good friend and support the mutual romance. As hard and hurtful as that may be, sometimes being the bigger person pays off in the long run.

  • I really like the "Or.." part. Trying to outdo your best friend isn't going to make either of you feel good, especially if she finds out. That would be a scary conversation! And yeah, let's hope she's a good enough friend...or he comes to his senses!
