Blogging 101

Dear Mel,

I just created a blog on Blogspot.com. It's just about my life as a normal teenaged girl. How do I gain an audience?

Dear New Blogger,

Gaining an audience is tough, no doubt. My personal blog, Slightly Smitten, has about 35 followers. But that number pales in comparison to the amount of followers that other blogs have. A Cup of Jo, one of my favorite blogs, has a whopping 6,085 followers. So unfair.
Anyways, there are a number of ways to increase your readership.
To begin with, you must make sure that your blog is actually good. If it is a sucky blog about all of your ex-boyfriends, then no one will want to read it. Blog about interesting, unique stuff. Make sure it is visually appealing, too. Skulls and crossbones are definitely not good to use on your blog header.
Next, you need to make your blog known. Put a link to it on your Facebook page. Update your status to alert your friends of your latest social networking venture. Tell your friends to make accounts and become followers. Oh, and be sure to comment on other blogs that you like. Whenever I leave comments on someone's blog, that person almost always returns the favor. This will get you new followers.
There is one last thing that you can do to get more followers. It's sneaky and deceitful, but hey, it works. Create a few fake accounts. You will then be able to comment on your own blog. When others see how many followers/comments you have, then they will want to join, too. (Confession: I have 4 fake accounts on Blogspot. Shh! Don't tell)
Happy blogging!
