Dear Mel,
Tonight is Halloween and I can't decide what to do. My friends are all going to a huge party, but I really don't want to go because I don't know a lot of the people who will be there. I have other friends that are just going to trick-or-treat and then watch a scary movie. What should I do?
-To Go or Not To Go
Dear To Go or Not To Go,
Do what you want to do.
If you feel like being at the party will be uncomfortable and awkward, then don't go.
If you feel like trick-or-treating will be more fun, then do it.
However, I understand that, sometimes, it's not as easy as that. There is another option, an option that I choose a lot:
Assuming that you have your driver's license, offer to be the DD, or Designated Driver, for the night. (Of course, that means you can't drink at the party. Not even a sip.) This way, you will be able to go to the party, say hi to some friends, and smile for a few pictures that will end up on Facebook. Then, when you start to get bored or feel out of place, simply slip out the door and drive to meet up with your other friends. It's the best of both worlds! No, but seriously, I do this a lot. It works like a charm.
Have fun tonight!
-Mel
