Curtis Mann is a Chicago-based photographer who shows at Kavi Gupta gallery. In 2009 his work was featured in the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago's UBS 12x12 exhibition program, and last year was included in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. His recent exhibition at Kavi Gupta (October 23, 2010 to January 30, 2011) was the subject of a review I wrote for ArtPulse Magazine's Spring 2011 issue (Vol. 2 No. 3).
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Curtis Mann's studio, as a part of of Art Chicago 2011's VIP Black Pass program. By the looks of my fellow attendees, I was one of the youngest and definitely the least fiscally solvent of the group, as is par for the course when I attend VIP events. Like David Cross said about flying first class, I always imagine the rich old blue hairs whispering to each other about the Make-A-Wish foundation. In reality, everybody was nice, especially Curtis. He showed us around his studio, talked to us about his career, how he makes his work, his recent exhibitions, and plans for the future.
