It's easy to make some broad, sweeping statement about what the Fourth of July stands for, and easier still to say something really stupid in the process.  So, I'm going to avoid all that, and just stick to the facts.  About snacks.

Ebersmoore offered beer and, as a pleasant surprise, hard cider!

Friday night was pretty sparse, presumably because of the holiday weekend, but Ebersmoore was having an opening, so we went to check it out.  This is one of those galleries that has really, really grown on me, ever since I first saw them back at their old space, EbersB9.  They've always got something interesting going on.  Their snack offerings are typically limited to the usual apartment gallery standard of a tub of ice with cans of cheap domestic beer floating in it, which is a nice change from the cheap red wine or white wine the storefront galleries tend to serve.

This week, however, they still had the beer, but they also had a type of hard apple cider I've never had before:  Magners Original Irish Cider.  New to me, it's an Irish cider that compares favorably with the more familiar Hornsby's or Woodchuck ciders I'm used to.  It was nice and refreshing on a hot evening, and I had a few.  Thanks for the ciders, guys!

Saturday: Jeriah with his sausage at Monument 2.

Saturday Monument 2 Gallery was having their opening for This Is Still Life, and were hosting a BBQ in conjunction with the opening.  It was a pretty informal affair, with folk showing up with different things and throwing them on the grill.  The first things done were portobello mushrooms, which I threw on a burger bun, and some asparagus on the side.  There were some dismayed grumbles at this early lack of meat, but none from me:  I spent the first twenty years of my life as a vegetarian, and although I enjoy meat now, I can totally rock a vegetarian BBQ.  Especially if there's corn on the cob on the grill...which arrived shortly.

After I'd enjoyed my mushroom "burger," the meat came out.  I had a sausage, and one of those ears of corn.  Someone then brought bison dogs (hot dogs made of bison meat) but I was pretty stuffed by that point.

We started out drinking the beer out of the cooler in the gallery, but after a while, that started to run low, so Steph and I decided to get a 30-pack of Old Style, which kept things going for a bit.  Eventually, though, people started drifting off, and so we headed home, pleasantly bloated.

Grillin' at Julius Caesar.

Sunday was the Fourth of July itself, and what we had in store was...another BBQ!  This one was at Julius Caesar, which was showing work by Gil Rocha and a group show called Sorry I Didn't Have Time to Google You.  I'd never been to this space before and it was nice to see.  There was a snack table inside with watermelon slices in a big Ziploc bag, chips, and salsa.  And a cooler full of different sorts of beer.  We had Tecate.

The grilling was going on in the alley.  There were a variety of things going on, but I went with sausage and an ear of corn.  It was hot out, so we all wiggled our way into some shade.  Some neighbors kids came out and were setting off firecrackers in the alley, which was pretty cool other than when they started throwing 'em up in the air and we had to dodge them as they fell.  That didn't last long, though, and for the most part it was good old family fun.  Their dad was around enough to occasionally dampen the more unsafe behaviors.  The highlights of their show was when they set off a big firecracker, which they politely warned us was coming.  It was nice and loud, and I high-fived the kid who'd set it off.

After a few beers, and a nice discussion with Patrick Bobilin and Erin Nixon of Noble and Superior Projects about everything from our respective beer snobberies to the role of artist run spaces in gentrification, we had another BBQ to get to, so we headed out.

Happy Fourth of July, and thanks to everyone who hosted events this weekend!  So long, and thanks for all the sausage!  Taking the weekend as a whole, I got nicely stuffed, and got a decent buzz on top of it.
