Do you dig abstraction? If so, Gallery KH has it in the pretty-paintings variety. Works by the dead artist Hans Hofmann and the living artist Carolyn Cole open Friday night in this North Side gallery.
These blocky, bold and deceptively simple paintings can serve as a gateway drug of sorts of contemporary, conceptual and generally less-easy-to-digest art that might be found on the West Loop.
Works from each artist complement each other, and they all have that vaguely generic it-will-look-good-over-the-couch quality. And I don't mean that as an insult. Who wants a work that DOESN'T go with the couch?
Hmm. Well, this isn't a decorating blog, so I won't digress. But don't the North Side galleries generally tend to generate such pressing questions?
Not that there's anything wrong with that. And in this economy, material aspirations must be celebrated because that's what feeds our capitalist machine, no?
