Western Exhibitions and the Weekend

I'd like to spotlight a couple things about the upcoming weekend, and also give links to worthy people who cull through all this stuff.

In a nutshell, tonight is the second Friday of the month, so Pilsen (around 18th and Halsted - see our map) has got a whole lineup of stuff. They say there are 35 galleries open tonight, but we only list a few on the map.  Our criteria is that you have to show work other than your own, otherwise which we categorize it as a studio. Soon we'll have a studio map, where people can add their space. Still, Pilsen has good stuff.

Duncan MacKenzie, my peer from Bad at Sports and person who tries to idiot-proof me on a monthly basis, said "Philip von Zweck does more art that's worthy of national recognition than almost anyone in this city, and he does it out of his apartment." Well, tonight he's got a special space in the back room of Western Exhibitions (link contains explicit imagry), and is  titled "they will not ruin us through the things that we like". The front room is dedicated to "The Ecstasyist", a show about desire, alternate standards of beauty and dynamics within sexual relationships, as well as some visually intriguing approaches to figuration.

Scott Speh, executive director of Western Exhibitions, was kind enough to send me a few pictures from von Zweck's curatorial endeavor, but I'm going to put this one in, full size, so the text can be read.

I could list more, but I'd never do it as well as Stephanie Burke. Check out her Gallery Crawl for this week, and her listing on Bad at Sports which includes Green Lantern's closing party, a new gallery called ebersb9, and a window gallery: Art on Armitage.

Also, apartment gallery Lloyd Dobler is back in action with an opening tonight.

In national news, the National Endowment of the Arts is back! Dawoud already got people talking about it here.

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior has approved a bill that sets the annual budgets for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities at $170 million each for the 2010 fiscal year. source

Wall St. Journal commentary on the safe choice.

Okay, last but not least, as a rule I'm not going to plug my own stuff, but due to this blog, my plan to do more big wall paintings has been shelved for a bit. I co-curated this show, and we close it down with a reception on Sunday, out in Skokie, 11-2 PM. Lox and bagels, coffee, orange juice.

Have a good one. I'm going on a real, live date with my husband, so tonight you're on your own. :)

  • As a Pilsen dweller, I'm always excited for something free to do in the neighborhood the second Friday of each month. Thanks for posting!
