I started following the issue of South Side coverage when I read about he narrowly-avoided protest outside the Chicago Tribune after an a "Artists in Chicago" magazine-insert was published that excluded African Artists almost completely. Around the same time was the panel discussion at the Art Institute (audio of panel discussion) (which is great overall, just ignore the remark about "Bernie Madoff people toward the end). The pannel triggered some heated comments ona New City Article about South Side artists.Yesterday, Dawoud wrote a great editorial on the subject:
I've started exploring the South Side art scene and I'm totally digging it. Went to Guichard Gallery last night and will profile them next week.
Gallery Guichard is in a part of Bronzeville, which is a beautiful area, reminded me a little of Bucktown. Guichard's opening tonight has the first solo exhibit they're ever had, featuring the work of Calvin Coleman. Their site is under reconstruction but they have around 900 images on Flickr
Also in Bronzeville this weekend:
Lake Meadows Art Fair This year's featured artist is painter Dale Washington, whose abstract imagery, according to the LMAF, deals with everyday people and situations from jazz clubs to fish fries and the urban Chicago lifestyle in general.
