Illinois' Marriage Equality Battle heads to the courts!

Illinois' Marriage Equality Battle heads to the courts!

Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois announced today that they will be filing lawsuits in the state of Illinois to seek marriage equality for same-sex couples. Though they are taking the battle to the courts, in a mass e-mail sent out from Equality Illinois, the battle will also still continue in Springfield.

"Under this two-track approach, Equality Illinois, the state’s oldest and largest LGBT advocacy organization, will continue to push a legislative strategy in Springfield to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry in Illinois, while the judicial remedy is being sought in the courts," Equality Illinois said in its' e-mail blast.

Moving here from a state that bared any recognition of same-sex couples, I am delighted to live in a state that not only offers Civil Unions, but also puts marriage equality on the forefront.

It will be interesting to see whether the Illinois General Assembly or the Illinois Courts will enact marriage equality first.

  • General Assembly will try first, courts in this state take too long.
