The state of Illinois requires anyone who is in the business of buying, selling or leasing property to have a license. You can even begin working once you've enrolled. Some other tools you'll need to be a successful leasing agent is great customer service skills, a smart phone and an insured vehicle to drive people to see apartments. Your car will be your office so make sure it's nice and clean. It's also a good idea to learn as much as possible about the neighborhoods and real estate business in general. Finally, make sure you sign on with a strong, reputable company/broker like the Apartment People. Commission splits are important but a company's experience level, support system and size of inventory will ultimately determine the success factor.
