Howells & Hood New Hot Spot at Tribune Tower - Photos
The historic Tribune Tower is an iconic Neo-Gothic beauty that has graced the southern tip of the Magnificent Mile for over 90 years. It was designed by architects John Howells and Raymond Hood. In 1922 Howells & Hood's design was selected from more than 260 entrants in a competition to build the the most beautiful office building in the world, The Tribune Tower. They won the competition hands down from over 280 drawings submitted in the international contest put forth by Col. Robert McCormick and the Chicago Tribune. The competition worked brilliantly for months as a publicity stunt with $100,000 in prize money, $50,000 for 1st prize and the second place winner (architect Eliel Saarinen received) $20,000.
Howells & Hood is the name of the newest hot spot on Michigan Avenue, located in the Tribune Tower and has just now opened to the public. Some of these photos were taken from their private party room located on the 25th floor, which is not open to the public, although it can be rented for private events. I found the view from the 25th floor breathtaking!
Howells & Hood can accommodate over 1000 guest with 3 bars and also has the distinction of the largest number of beer taps in one location in the entire Chicago area. 114 different beers can be poured from 360 beer taps. This place is huge - the street-level space measures 17,300 square feet!
Howells & Hood serves lunch and dinner seven days a week and will eventually offer a weekend brunch. Howells & Hood's Executive Chef Scott Walton and Bottleneck's Corporate Executive Chef Paul Katz have collaborated on a menu that offers globally-inspired cuisine with locally-sourced product. The restaurant officially opened to the public on St. Patrick's Day weekend. Hours are from 11:00 am - 2:00 am.
