Hello friends.

Over the last few weeks, I have been asked numerous times when I would write my highly anticipated blog post: “Bacon…the Candy of Meats."  Well here it...included in this week’s local restaurant review. I hope this will finally shut a few folks up in Lubbock and Matador.

Bacon, bacon and more bacon.

That is what you are going to find at Paddy Long's Beer & Bacon Pub and I cannot find anything wrong with that. Add in a few hard to find craft beers and you get a place that I definitely wanted to try.

Paddy Long’s is a fairly easy destination…just a short walk from the Diversey Brown Line stop and across the street from Lover’s Lane…making it convenient if you are in need of a gift or novelty.

For all patrons of pork, Paddy Long’s is a virtual shrine to one of God’s greatest creations.

The pub is decorated in “Modernist Pig Chic” except for the traditional beer signs, the occasional Elvis figurine and rugby paraphernalia. The décor does include some creepy stuff from the Mr. Bacon collection.

Recently, I joined three compadres for a long lunch followed by an afternoon off. Upon arrival, we decided to sit at the bar in order to get a better view of the ample supply of available craft beers.

After selecting our opening round beer…I chose the Ommegang Witte…we decided on two appetizers: the Bacon Grenades and chicken wings. The Grenades are beer-battered, deep fried homemade spicy sausage wrapped in bacon and served with a house BBQ sauce. They are also a little bit of pig heaven. They have a wonderful flavor without being too spicy. The BBQ sauce is “beer” influenced and did not overpower the pork flavor.

The chicken wings were well prepared and the homemade wing sauce was tasty but they are just a little above average and not in the same class with the Grenades. The wings are part of the ½ price appetizer special on Monday nights and definitely worth a try during the special.

Moving on to the entrées, I once again decided to try two different sandwiches and the first was the famous Bacon Bomb Sandwich. The Bomb was featured in this Food Network piece. What is it? The Bomb is five pounds of sausage, pork, and beef, wrapped in a woven shell of brown sugar bacon….think of a meatloaf wrapped in bacon.

The Bacon Bomb Sandwich is a nice, thick slice of the Bomb covered in melted pepperjack and the house BBQ sauce. The sandwich was amazing but had I not been dividing it up between the group, I could not have eaten the whole sandwich. Unless you are a member of the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), I suggest you share the sandwich between two people.

Of course, you can order the whole Bomb and take the Bomb Challenge if you can eat like Eric “Badlands” Booker, Sonja “The Black Widow” Thomas who is "The Leader of the Four Horsemen of the Esophagus" (not to be confused with the REAL “Four Horsemen”) or Joey Chestnut. The Challenge is for any brave soul who can eat a whole Bomb and an order of fries in 45 minutes. Even the “King of Craft Beers” should be afraid of this meal. Only one (1) person has been able to accomplish this feat.

Next up, was the 3 Bacon BBQ Burger. This culinary creation is a bacon lovers delight. Three different bacons (Irish, hickory smoked and applewood), pepperjack cheese and the house BBQ sauce cover a ½ pound burger. Absolutely pig-tastic. The burger was cooked medium and the BBQ sauce, which gets its beer flavor from Three Floyds Alpha King, gets the job done.

As for the fries, the “Salsa King” deemed them solid but not great. That’s right…one member of my group had to once again leave the review early to attend salsa dance class.

Once we finished the burger, all bets were off in regards to dessert. While they do serve a deep-fried cheesecake, more food was out of the question. All I was looking for was to drink my dessert out of a pint glass.

It was during this period of our stay that our bartender Sam extended an invitation for us to sample Malört. As I noted in last week’s Lagnaippe, this was something that I never want to smell or taste again.

Overall, the experience was fantastic and rates a perfect FIVE (5) PIGS on GREGG'S FIVE (5) PIG Scale. Paddy Long’s is definitely for the pig lover.

    Although this is a through review of what seems to be a must visit establisment if I ever lose my way and return to your fine city, I do not feel that a review of a resturant lives up to the suspense you built with weeks of promising a blog titled “Bacon the Candy of Meat”. I expect more from a blogger such as yourself. But, much like a bad wreck I find myself unable to look away when you submit a new post. Thus I look forward to your next blog.
