On Father’s Day Nike and The Darren Group are encouraging fathers to bring out their children or any child to the Father’s Day Basketball Clinic. Nike has teamed up with former Chicago Bulls “ball boy” and friend of many basketball greats, Darren Hammond, President and CEO of The Darren Group in an effort to empower the youth by inspiring them to realize their potential through free Nike Basketball Clinics.
“I can relate to these kids, I grew up with similar circumstances but prayer and sports saved me. The game of basketball opened doors for me; from working as a ball boy for the Chicago Bulls to befriending basketball greats such as: Mark Aguirre, Isaiah Thomas and Michael Jordan. The game has afforded me life long relationships, social skills and conflict resolution. I’m hoping it will have the same impact on our youth today. If nothing else, I know the few hours they spend with me are a few more hours the streets can’t get them,” says Darren Hammond.
The clinics, taught by Nike’s “basketball experts,” will offer age-appropriate skills training. Participants will receive lunch, Nike t-shirt, hat, basketball and other gifts. Congressman of the 7th Congressional District, U.S. Representative Danny K. Davis and 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin will be on hand to address participants and celebrate with dads. The clinics will be held in a state of the art basketball facility typically not open to the public, it is generally used by professional players and V.I.P. guests, also known as the location where President Barack Obama played on Election Day.
The Darren Group is a not-for-profit, community organization focused on engaging our youth and young adults in sustainable empowering programs. Our mission is to save and enhance the lives of inner-city youth throughout the United States – one person, one block, one neighborhood and one city at a time. We seek to fulfill our mission by ending the epidemic of youth violence in the United States through the transformation of communication and educating society on this infectious disease by increasing the research, revenue and resources to find a cure. As with most other diseases, we have to fight for a cure while diligently working to save those already infected and affected.
