MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2011
RAINBOW/PUSH COALITION HEADQUARTERS
930 EAST 50th STREET (AT DREXEL BLVD)
Howard Pointer, a security specialist and longtime confidante of Congressman Jesse L. Jackson Jr., died Monday following a long illness. He was 66.
An Air Force veteran and former police officer, Pointer later provided private security services. Famous clients included President Bill Clinton, entertainer Bill Cosby, promoter Don King, the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., and the late attorney Johnnie Cochran.
A lifelong Chicago resident, Pointer joined the Air Force shortly after graduating from John Marshal Harlan High School in 1963. After his honorable discharge in 1967, Pointer earned a degree from Olive Harvey College while working with United Parcel Service. During this time he also met and married Ernestine Brown, with whom he shared 42 loving years.
Pointer joined the Chicago Police Department in 1970, where he served in the Intelligence Division (including the Red Squad) and later its Tactical Division. He left CPD in 1981 to work with the Illinois Department of Corrections.
In 1992, Pointer started his own firm, High Point Security, which served businesses throughout the city and county. In 1996, High Point was hired as the lead agency to provide private security during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Pointer and Ernestine had one daughter, Dana Alexis, both of whom survive. Beside his love for family, "Howard" loved, music, history and politics, both local and national. He was also a fitness buff, weightlifter and occasional golfer.
He served as a deacon at Cosmopolitan Community Church in Chicago and for the past 40 years was an active supporter of Rev. Jackson, the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition and Black Men Pushing.
Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., who always affectionately referred to Pointer as "my Uncle Howard," hired him as a special assistant in 2003, and he quickly became among Jackson's most trusted advisors.
"Uncle Howard was my best friend and I miss him very deeply," the Congressman said.
Pointer is survived by his wife Ernestine; daughter Dana Alexis; granddaughter Madison Llaine; mother Alma Seymour; stepmother Lorraine Pointer; mother-in-law Rosa Brown; sister Barbara Yvonne Benton (Leonard); brothers Glen Seymour (Andrea) and Greg Seymour; sisters-in-laws Ophelia Paschal and Rose Robinson; brothers-in-law Ranza Morris and Leslie Brown; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
The funeral is set for Monday, starting at 9:00 AM, at the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, at 930 East 50th Street (near Drexel) in Chicago.
