Paranormal Improv

Improvisation is the scariest artform. Completely unrealiable and in the wrong hands a terrible show. pact2b.jpg

I caught a sneak preview of the movie "Paranormal Activity." This movie has been sitting on shelf for the past two years, but has recently garnered lots of internet buzz and the line around the block at the Music Box Thumbnail image for IMG_2581.JPGlast night was proof of that. The film uses some improvisation to fill out its exposition and dialogue and it's not very good because it ignores some very basic long-form tenets. As the "reality" genre continues its slouch toward Bethlehem and successful improv projects (Curb Your Enthusiasm, scenes from popular movies, etc.) more and more shows attempt to use improvisation since it seems so easy.

The "rules" of improvisation were developed so that an improvised show can still have a sense of narrative and presentation. Here are some tips for would-be users of improvisation:
  • endless arguing is boring to watch. Especially if the same topics are being addressed over and over.
  • people acting dumber than they are in order for the plot to progress is groan-inducing.
  • characters choosing plot over actual emotions moves the story, but will never move us or cause us to care about the story.
Hilariously enough, the movie Paranormal Activity violates all of the above.
