The tide goes in, the tide goes out, and you can’t explain that! This is what news commentator Bill O’Reilly blurted out the last time debating atheist David Silverman. For a few seconds it appeared Silverman was stunned by such a crazy statement, he momentarily looked like a deer in the headlights. We can explain that. The gravitational forces of the moon cause the tides. This time Silverman was not going to lose his focus no matter what Bill was going to throw at him, and oh boy did he have a doozy. Christianity isn’t a religion, it’s a philosophy! What?! Did he just say what I think he said?
OK Folks, here’s the difference between religion and philosophy.
Live a virtuous life – PHILOSOPHY
God said be good – RELIGION
Socrates was a wise man – PHILOSOPHY
Jesus Christ was the only son of god – RELIGION
Why is it every time Mr. O’Reilly has an argument about religion he comes off looking like a loon? He told Richard Dawkins that until science can explain the origin of the universe, he’ll stick with Christianity. What kind of a reason is that to be religious? Why not worship your toaster until science can explain everything? That would make as much sense. The problem with Bill O’Reilly is he knows much of what’s in the Bible is crazy, but he feels the need to defend it because for him it represents traditional values. Since he can’t apply logic to his beliefs, he’s unable to apply logic to his arguments. And when that happens, as Jon Stewart would say, there’s an avalanche on Bullshit Mountain.
