God did not write the United States Constitution nor is this country founded on Biblical principles. We did not allow our government to become a secular government, it always has been.
The Constitution begins with “We the People,” not “I the god of Abraham.” It is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Buddhist nation. It is a country for people of all religious beliefs. It is a product of philosophy, called a “new experiment” at inception. It is not a theocracy nor will it ever be one. When comparing the First Commandment with the First Amendment, the difference is striking, the superiority of the latter is clear.
The first democracy was born in Athens Greece by people who worshiped Zeus. Rome was a republic long before they adopted Christianity as the state religion. Despite the facts, we still have delusional idiots like the disgraced ex-politician Tom DeLay trying to tell us that secularism is bad and the USA was created by god for Christians. These people insult the legacy of the Founding Fathers. They attempt to pervert the foundation of this nation.
The individual rights and liberties granted by the United States Constitution have expanded over the years. It is not an ancient and static document of ignorance, irrelevance and bigotry. It is a product of human reasoning. Since inception slavery is now illegal and women have the right to vote. Now we see equal rights expanding to the gay community. This is progress, human progress.
When it comes to the foundation of this country, look to the Founding Fathers for the answer and the document they built. Many of these men were Christian, but still shared secular values and built a secular nation.
“The foundation of our Empire was not laid in the gloomy age of Ignorance and Superstition, but at an Epoch when the rights of mankind were better understood and more clearly defined, than at any former period, the researches of the human mind, after social happiness, have been carried to a great extent, the Treasures of knowledge, acquired by the labours of Philosophers, Sages and Legislatures, through a long succession of years, are laid open for our use, and their collected wisdom may be happily applied in the Establishment of our forms of Government”
