I can't say I ever watched the Beauty and the Beast TV series from the 80s, but it was on for 3 seasons, so obviously someone was watching it.
The original series staring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, follows the relationship between the man-beast Vincent (Perlman), and district attorney Catherine (Hamilton).
Vincent lives in a subterranean utopian community of social outcasts, and Catherine lives in the surface world of New York.
The series was a modern take on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, that originally aired from 1987 -1989.
Fast forward to 2012, this series is getting a reboot on The CW with a familiar face. Kristin Kreuk, best known for her role as Lana Lang on Smallville, is staring as "beauty" Catherine Chandler.
In this new series Catherine is homicide detective who witnessed her mother's murder when she was a teenager. Catherine would have been killed also, but she is saved by the man-beast Vincent (played by actor Jay Ryan).
After watching the preview clip I don't know how to feel about this show. I never watched the series this show is based on, and I was never a Lana Lang fan. It's hard to see Kristin Kreuk and not think of Lana.
This Beauty and the Beast series will be coming to The CW Thursday nights with Vampire Diaries (a show I absolutely love). I'll probably give it a shot, and try to be open minded about it. In all honesty, I can't see this series lasting very long (Secret Circle seemed like a good idea too, and now it's cancelled). But maybe I'm wrong, and I'll end up eating my words a year from now.
All 3 seasons of the 80s series is actually streaming on Netflix, so maybe I'll watch that and give the CW series a shot this fall.
