Star Wars Sitcom?

Can spin-offs be as good as the original?

Monday Lucasfilms announced that they were developing a Star Wars animated sitcom. When I heard the news it sounded like some kind of joke. Lucas seems to be milking this cash cow dry, if you ask me. I love Star Wars as much as the next nerd, but is this taking it too far? Seth Green and fellow Robot Chicken creator/executive producer Matt Senreich are creative consultants on this project. Green reassured the Star Wars fans that, "This isn't going to suck as much as you think it is."

The show is said to not be a sketch comedy show like "Robot Chicken," and it's
not a spoof. Matt Senreich said it will be a story comedy and "character
driven." It may include crossover appearances from the movie
characters. Senreich promised, "We're on the same page as the fans, because we
are fans."

I have no idea how to feel about this. Personally, I think "Star Wars" and "sitcom" don't belong in the same sentence. It's a sci-fi action adventure! Unless they plan on creating some comedic parody like Robot Chicken (which they already said they weren't), how can fans take this show seriously? The Star Wars Robot Chicken
sketches are hilarious, but I don't know if this new show will work. Is Lucas going too far, or will this be a wonderful new edition to the Star Wars legacy? Only time will tell. I'll just have to wait and try to be optimistic about this (I'm not doing so well on the optimism right now).

The animation for this project will be produced outside the U.S.,
but a studio hasn't been chosen. A start date and network hasn't been
announced either.

  • I'm thinking this is gonna suck. Seth Green said it won't suck as much as we think it will, but that doesn't mean it WON'T suck (no offense meant to be directed at Mr. Green's or Senreich's talents).

Personally I think George Lucas was a genius when he made Star Wars, emphasis on the WAS. He came up with one good idea, yeah great congrats, so what ELSE has he done well? I love Star Wars, but it's gotten to the point where it appears as being milked dry for cash. As it stands, just using "official" material, there appears to be a lot of incongruities in the history. Why? Blatant overuse of the material...

Personally I think that if Mr. Lucas was a little more creative, he could come up with something new that's interesting as opposed to some crappy knock-off rehashing his old material. There's a reason he'd like to destroy all the copies of the Star Wars Christmas Special...

Back on topic; I'll believe that the show doesn't suck when I see it. It might be hilarious, but I won't hold my breath...

  • In reply to Crossosphinx:

I completely agree! Why doesn't George Lucas come up with something NEW!? They keep creating Star Wars spin offs, and books, and comics, and prequels, and cartoons, and it's getting out of control.

It's going to do well most likely because of the younger naive audience that is unaware of how awesome Star Wars USED to be! I'm almost certain I'll watch this...if only so I can tell people how big of a mistake it is. Maybe the Star Wars folks will prove me wrong lol.

PS- I wanna see this Christmas Special lol
