Feeling Out of Place

For those who don't know Anime Central, or ACen, is just around the corner...Well actually it's a little less than 3 months away (May 14-16, 2010), but that is plenty of time to toss together any last minute costumes! ACen is the 5th largest anime convention in North America. I've gone to ACen 4 times, and I've always had fun! There are always several hundred cosplayers, an arcade, rave, costume contests, and just an all around good time.

My one complaint with this convention is the massive amount of immature teenagers. As someone in their mid-20s, ACen can get slightly annoying. I have nothing against teens, I used to be one not that long ago, but this is a 24hr con that lasts 3 days...sooner or later some kid is going to annoy the hell out of you. With their cat ears, and their paddling, and their obsession with yaoi...3 days will seen like too much. You have to take in this crowd in small doses. If you're stuck waiting in some god awful line with them though, you're out of luck. My suggest to adult attendees, DON'T GO ALONE! Or at least meet up with other people your age at the con. I always find, that when I surround myself with an awesome group of friends (preferably my age), every con is fun! Don't get me wrong...adults do attend this event! Teens definitely out number adults ACen, so be prepared. Unfortunately, I'm going to miss it this year, but I'm looking forward to seeing all the pics of the new costumes!

Below are a few pics I took at ACen 2009!

  • Just wanted to say that I've been to more than one con where there were teens/preteens (nothing against anyone just stating the facts) that damaged/destroyed hotel property by being to hyperactive. There is even a hotel out in Detroit that decided a specific convention could no longer be held there because of the liability...

Now there are literally 20,000 people attending some of these cons, and it's maybe 2 out of that 20,000 that causes that kind of trouble. So .01% of the con-goers get a little TOO worked up (to the point that something gets damaged... like a wall or piller). Other than that there's just the standard crazy amounts of hyperactivity and excitement for people of all ages.

No, I get what you're saying. It's not ALL teens, and sometimes drunk adults are the ones causing trouble and breaking crap. I think my tolerance level for annoying people is just getting lower, and at cons it's usually the younger ones that are usually immature.

I've been to every Anime Central since it began. And I have to say there's many factors involved here. One is the maturity level of the convention. I've heard Anime Central described as a pedophile's paradise. There are too many young kids running around unchecked. The yaoi is out of control, as is the paddling. But another factor is the convention itself. The people in charge. They need to hire adults who do know what they're doing. Not immature IRT (Incident Response Team) members, who treat this like its college. Even the paid staff need to be replaced. Anime Central is one of the worst run conventions I've been to. Each year I tell myself, "One more year, and I'm done." This year will be my last year.

I used to enjoy this convention. It was a minor vacation. Where I could unwind and relax. Maybe find something cool in the dealer's room. Last year I didn't spend any money in the dealer's room. I just took pictures. That's what this con has become for me, an expensive photography trip.

If you want a good convention, try a comic book convention. Or even a lesser known sci-fi con. Many of the same dealers are there. Its just they better run. Not to mention, the con goers are better.

I agree Nick. I go to the con to get pictures of all the costumes, and I love cosplaying. I don't ever participate in the panels or concerts. ACen is actually the only anime con I go to. I do favor the sci-fi and comic ones. I don't know what it is, I just like the vibe of those cons. And there aren't as many younger teens acting weird. Comic and sci-fi cons security usually has things under control also.

Last year I had fun at ACen because I hung out with all my friends, and some awesome Doctor Who cosplayers. I could live without going to ACen every year. But, it is one of the few times I see some of my out of town friends though.
