What Lin Manuel Miranda, Listen to Your Mother, and my trans son have in common

What Lin Manuel Miranda, Listen to Your Mother, and my trans son have in common
Lin Manuel Miranda, Listen to Your Mother, and my trans son have absolutely nothing in common. Yet all three were in my dream last night, for a very good reason. In my dream, I was sitting in a balcony of our church, while my son and some of his friends played. Below us, on the... Read more »

I forget my son is transgender

I forget my son is transgender
I have a confession to make: I forget my son is trans. I remember once, about three years ago, talking on the phone to a grandmother from Washington. Her grandson was trans and her job was to vet prospective members for a discussion board. She was the first person I had spoken to about my... Read more »

10 things people want to know about my trans son

10 things people want to know about my trans son
I recently received a Voices of the Year for #Blogher17 and had the opportunity to present my essay on stage. Being visible provides me with a platform to educate others, but I realized that many of the same questions kept coming up. Obviously, I’ve written about nearly all of them at least once. And obviously,... Read more »

The Do's and Don'ts of being an Ally to Parents of Trans Kids

The Do's and Don'ts of being an Ally to Parents of Trans Kids
I get asked a lot of questions about my trans son, by friends and strangers alike. Mostly because I’m visible and willing to share. Partly because people are curious. I never mind answering questions, being open to educating people, sharing my knowledge, building allies wherever and however I can. But I sometimes forget how little... Read more »

Texas passing a 'bathroom bill' that targets trans students is only the beginning #notinanystate

Texas passing a 'bathroom bill' that targets trans students is only the beginning #notinanystate
Texas rushed to pass a bill on Sunday evening that is nothing short of outright discrimination against trans children. After a heated and emotional debate, they passed the bill by a vote of 94-50. The amendment added to this bill that specifically targets trans students is being called a “common sense” solution. A solution that... Read more »

I am not the greatest mom in the world

I am not the greatest mom in the world
I am not the greatest mom in the world. I’m not seeking validation, I assure you. This is a statement of fact. Most moms would love to hear that phrase, and some moms deserve it. I hear it a lot. And I do not deserve it. At least, not for the reasons I’m hearing it.... Read more »

Be Our Voice: To friends who want to help my trans son

Be Our Voice: To friends who want to help my trans son
You tell me to be strong and keep fighting. You tell me I’m a great parent to my child and I need to speak up and speak out. You tell me that I have your support and your love and that you’ll fight for me and my son until the bitter end. But it feels... Read more »

My Life in Ornaments (or why I can't seem to put a tree up or take it down without crying)

Every good story should start with a pickle. We hide ours on the Christmas tree every year. So the story goes (either from Woolworth or an old German tradition) the pickle must be the last thing to be hung on the tree, and the first child to find it wins an extra present. We inevitably end up hanging and re-hanging this pickle a dozen times the first day, at least, but it keeps the kids amused.
I have a real problem. For the past two years, I seem unable to put my Christmas tree up or take it down, without dissolving into a puddle of emotions. Last year, it happened while I unpacked all the ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree. All the crinkled tissue wreaths and Santa hand prints, with... Read more »

My trans son is a real boy

My trans son is a real boy
The Blue Fairy waved her magic wand today and turned my child into a real live boy. At least, that’s a little bit how it felt, opening our passports. The federal government legally recognized my son as a boy. We danced for ten minutes in the middle of the kitchen. He checked again and again,... Read more »
