News Flash, America! Life is about making choices

News Flash, America! Life is about making choices
NEWS FLASH, America! Life is all about making choices and…… (Here is the kicker!) …and accepting consequences. Is that amazing?! Unfortunately, our society has slowly turned into a world where consequences from choices or decisions become null or void instead of facing them. When we do not face the consequences of our actions, we are... Read more »

How fear, hate and negativity won the 2014 mid-term election

How fear, hate and negativity won the 2014 mid-term election
As all of us woke up this morning, we definitely woke up for a different world than what we woke up to yesterday before the election results came back. Personally, I  believe that I just woke up with the biggest hangover and it will not go away. It really hurt. Last night, I thought I... Read more »

Election Day 2014: 5 top reasons why you should vote today
Today’s Election Day.  It is the day where the political ad and phone calls stop so you can enjoy your family dinners in complete peace (almost!). I do not care who you vote for (well, maybe!) but if you do not vote there is nothing to complain about. There should not be any reason where... Read more »

Dining Inequality: Blog Action Day 2014 meets Gluten Awareness Month
When I examined the topic of inequality for this blog article as part of Blog Action Day 2014, I decided to go with my heart.  With this month being Celiac Awareness Month, I believe that there needs a stronger voice for inequality in the restaurant world for people with food allergies. There is still a... Read more »

St. Ambrose Pumpkin Ale
I always hear magical music this time of the year when I go to my local Binny’s in Downers Grove/Lombard when pumpkin beer season starts. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Since there is not many songs for fall or Halloween, I usually have Christmas music in my head as I go up... Ray Rice: Knowing when say NO to domestic violence and abuse

Ray Rice: Knowing when say NO to domestic violence and abuse
There is another statistic and example of domestic violence. Honestly, I was not planning on writing about the whole Ray Rice and domestic violence.  I have talked about domestic violance before in the past and felt like I was going to repeat myself. That’s until I saw this from another friend’s feed and I quickly... Read more »

Depression and Suicide Awareness: Everyone Deals with Personal Demons

Depression and Suicide Awareness: Everyone Deals with Personal Demons
Through music I either tame my demons or unleash them and allow them to be what they are. I don’t want the music to be about provocation, I want the music to bring you to a place where you feel at home. - Michael Franti As the news of Robin Williams’s passing came about, I was... Read more »

Missing My Angel Daughter: One Mother's Stillborn Loss
To my dearest Marianne: It has been over 13 1/2 years since your spirit and soul has left this earth before you had a chance to live it here on Earth.  Not a day goes by where I do not think about you and miss you.  The memories of you are still fresh in my... Read more »

Greetings, Chicago Suburbanites! Welcome to Active Suburbia! My name is Denise, but I am known as Firefly, Red, and "Hey there". I will be your tour guide to everything active within the Chicago suburbs. In this blog, I will be your guide to places within the Chicagoland Suburbs that will help lead a more active lifestyle and a lot of fun too. In fact, studies have shown that reading this blog will bring a smile on your face, a spring in your step, and burn those last nasty 5 lbs that you can't get off. (Ok, everything's true except for the last one that hasn't been proved.....YET, but I am determined to make it true.) Here's a short introduction about myself: I am a very active person. You can say that I have endurance, determination, grit, and hard work in my bones. I enjoy running and cycling. I have completed a couple of marathons, half-marathons, 5K's, etc in my running career. I also enjoy trying most things active and willing to explore if I have to. I enjoy checking out the trails near me and doing a lot of running. I also completed my 1st Century ride last September and loved every minute of it. I am also a suburbanite living in the awesome suburb of Berwyn. I am a suburban girl at heart and love every minute of it. I originally grew up in the frozen tundra of the Twin Cities. I am also a die-hard sports fan and enjoy the competitive nature of it. I love baseball, college and professional football, and even hockey. I love cheering for my Twins, Vikings, Golden Gophers, and Avalanche (LONG story - trust me!). I am always interested in finding more fun places within the Chicago suburbs. If you know of a gem, shoot me an e-mail at activesuburbia@gmail.com. You can also follow me on Twitter too.
