Suck It, People's Gas

Dear People's Gas,

You can suck it so hard.

Suck it,

Ana

I moved into my new apartment one week ago today. Yesterday, I came home from work to find that my gas was off. No heat. No oven. No...and this is the WORST...hot water. I can't even boil a kettle and use it, because there is no stovetop.

Now, rewind to the week before I moved in where I filled out the online form for both gas and electricity. I even retrieved the official address from my landlord. There are two units in my building. This is not rocket science.

After a little investigation this morning, it turns out that my Apt 1 was not what People's Gas was looking for. Nope. The correct answer was Apartment 1 Front.  Yes. Apartment (spelled out) 1 Front (in a building where I have the entire floor.."back" is grass).

I guess it was incredibly, incredibly confusing for them to connect that Apartment 1 Front was moving out, while an Apt 1 was requesting service...on the same date. Crazy, I know! Then, looking at the address and seeing that there are only two units registered...the other being an Apartment 2 and continuing service.

As I mentioned, I applied for ComEd and People's Gas on the exact same day. My electricity service, using the same address, is fully registered. Of the two, ComEd was the simpler form to fill out. People's Gas also asks for your landlord's contact information. Why do they ask for this if not to confirm these sorts of changes? What other use could they possibly have for those details?

After responding to an email and requesting the earliest date/time to have my gas turned back on (FYI - I have to wait A WEEK!), I have not received any type of confirmation from People's Gas.

Naturally, my confidence in their abilities is pretty shot, so I called their number. According to that information, they had scheduled me for the WRONG DATE and there was no time information AT ALL. I then wait to talk to a customer service representative who had very little investment in wanting to help me. He then confirms that it has been scheduled for the wrong date and wrong time.

Here's the best part. To turn it off, they don't have to tell anyone, no one has to be there and they can just do it whenever. To turn it back on, you have to take off work, give them a FIVE HOUR window and they have to come into your apartment for an invasive inspection. On top of that, the rep told me that there will be a SERVICE CHARGE to have the freaking thing turned back on...you know the thing that should never have been turned off in the first place.

I asked to be transferred to a supervisor. No offense to the guy I was talking to, but in this situation I want to be in touch with somebody who can make the decisions. After being put on hold for 10 minutes, where I'm pretty sure they were just trying to get me to hang up, I was told that a supervisor would call me by 7 pm tonight...so...let's see if that happens.

The fact is that it is the middle of November and People's Gas made a error. I should be at the top of their lists to have this fixed. They should do it immediately and they should most definitely waive the service charge. The fact that I have to go without heat, a stove or hot water for a week is already completely unacceptable.

And what I'm hearing is that I'm not nearly the only one who has had this issue. Most people I have talked to had almost the EXACT same problem. That seems like a nice little scheme you've got going on, People's Gas. This is not an acceptable way to run a business. Can you imagine if this was the way I behaved in my day job? What chaos we would all be under?

Has People's Gas given you a headache? Unleash it all below.

  • so if you could jump in your DeLorean and go back in time, what would you tell PastAna to make this work smoother and prevent/mitigate the headache you are going through?

Wah, Wah, WAHHHH!! ME, ME, MEEE! I work with you in your day job -- you are worse than People's Gas. All you do all day is whine about your pathetic, little life. This is you: "If only the world was as truly wonderful as I am..." Well, wake up, toots...

    Hi Juan,

First of all, you must have me mistaken with someone else. You do not work with me. You do not know me personally. I think we can rest the rest of your comment on this obvious inaccuracy.

Second...toots? Are you an ol' timey cartoon?

Anyways, thanks for checking out my blog!

  • "RedEye's 'Madam of Fun' Ana Fernatt says a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous." Looks like the spin-doctors aren't paying much attention to what they're writing about.

I saw this and thought it looked like a refreshing change. But the first thing I found was:

"Dear People's Gas, You can suck it so hard. Suck it, .." Lost my interest after that...

Classy? Hardly. Fabulous? Well, who knows what that means anyway? Say whatever you want in response to this. I'll never be back to see it anyway. Make yourself happy.

    Hi Arklow -

I know you're not going to be back, but I thought I'd reply anyways. This post caught me in a really frustrated moment. Poor customer service drives me UP THE WALL! The fact that my circumstance is hardly a rarity seems really, really unfair.

That being said, the "classy and fabulous" quote comes from Coco Channel. It's an awesome idea, but I am never going to be CC. I, however, will remain accidentally sexy. It's about being imperfect, weird, quirky and doing whatever it is that makes you unique.

I'm a girl who tells inanimate things to "suck it," because something just sounds funny to me about that. I think it comes from watching too many Kathy Griffin stand up shows. And you know what, People's Gas CAN suck it.
